At 00:20 on the 20th of January, 1990 troops from other USSR regions numbering more than 20 thousand people attacked Baku and murdered innocent civilians without any agreement with Azerbaijan SSR’s Supreme Council of Presidium.
Thus, Constitutions of USSR and Azerbaijan SSR, as well as Constitutional law on sovereignty of Azerbaijan were violated. The attack resulted in 147 dead, 744 wounded and 841 illegal arrests. Civilians, young and elderly people, women and children were among the victims. On the 21st of January at the press-conference held in Azerbaijan Mission in Moscow, Azerbaijan national leader Heydar Aliyev condemned this crime against our people and considered destruction of unarmed civilians as an action contradicting law, democracy and humanity.
